Alta Langa DOCG
Piedmont's answer to Champagne: traditional-method fizz from Pinot Nero and Chardonnay grown on limestone marl in the cool upper Langhe, always vintage dated. Expect green apple, white peach, toasted hazelnut and bread crust, with sharp acidity and a fine, persistent mousse. The long lees minimum gives it more autolytic depth than most Franciacorta at the same price. The big Asti houses (Fontanafredda, Contratto, Banfi Piemonte, Coppo) drive volume, but small growers now make the most interesting bottles.
