Barbera del Monferrato DOC

The simple side of Monferrato Barbera, including the lightly fizzy version locals drink with salami and agnolotti. Bright purple, juicy cherry and blackberry, low tannin, high acid, no oak, often bottled young and sometimes frizzante. It is the wine of trattorie in Casale and Vignale, and at $12 to $18 it is one of the best food reds in Italy. Nothing to age; buy the latest vintage.
