Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC
Italy's only single-estate DOC, covering just the Tenuta San Guido vineyards of Sassicaia, the wine that launched the Super Tuscan movement in 1968 and forced the creation of Bolgheri DOC. It is Cabernet Sauvignon with a fifth of Cabernet Franc, aged two years in French barriques, and it is more restrained than most Bolgheri: cassis, cedar, graphite, bay leaf and dried tobacco, with fine, dry tannin and moderate alcohol. The 1985 is a legend; current releases need ten years.
