Breganze DOC
A small hill zone north of Vicenza that Fausto Maculan made famous in the 1980s with barrique-aged Cabernet and, above all, Torcolato, the local sweet wine from Vespaiola grapes twisted on strings and hung to dry. Torcolato is amber-gold, honeyed and unctuous with dried apricot, orange peel and a nutty finish, and it's the reason to taste the appellation. The dry Vespaiolo is sharp and citrusy with a bitter almond edge, a good fish white; the Cabernets are ripe, cedary and fairly tannic. Cantina Beato Bartolomeo, the co-op, makes solid versions of everything.
