Campi Flegrei DOC
A volcanic caldera on the edge of Naples where the sandy, phylloxera-free soils still carry ungrafted, century-old vines. Falanghina here is salty, lean and smoky, with lemon, green apple, white flowers and a sulfur-tinged mineral note; Piedirosso is a pale, light-bodied red with sour cherry, red plum, earthy, ashy notes and soft tannin, best with a slight chill. Small producers like La Sibilla and Agnanum farm vines inside the city limits on terraces above the sea. The wines are honest and a little wild, and they taste of nowhere else.
