Cannonau di Sardegna DOC
Sardinia's signature red, Grenache by another name and likely on the island since Spanish rule. Expect strawberry and dried cherry, myrtle, Mediterranean scrub, warm alcohol and soft but present tannin; the best come from the mountainous Nuoro interior (Oliena, Jerzu, Mamoiada) and show more grip and a savory, blood orange edge. Riserva needs two years of age. Prices are gentle and quality has climbed sharply over the last decade.
