Cirò DOC
Calabria's one internationally known wine and one of the oldest wine sites in Italy, allegedly the source of the wine given to Olympic athletes. Gaglioppo makes a pale garnet red with sour cherry, dried rose, orange peel, thyme and a firm, slightly drying tannin backed by fresh acidity; the rosato is one of the south's best, and the Greco Bianco whites are salty and lemony. The good producers pick early and use no new oak, so the wines are lighter and more savory than the color of the region suggests. Drink the base reds at three to six years.
