Colli dell'Etruria Centrale DOC
An umbrella DOC created in 1990 to give Chianti-zone estates a home for wines that didn't fit the Chianti rules, such as varietal Cabernet, whites, novello and Vin Santo. It was largely superseded by Toscana IGT and the later Vin Santo del Chianti DOCs, and today it's used almost exclusively for a few Vin Santos and the odd estate red. Expect the Vin Santo to be amber, oxidative, with dried apricot, walnut and caramel; the reds are everyday Sangiovese blends.
