Collina Torinese DOC
A small catch-all DOC for the hills right outside Turin, mostly farmed by a couple of dozen growers and drunk locally. The Barbera and Bonarda are light, fresh, tart-cherry reds with soft tannin and modest alcohol, meant for the trattoria table. The oddity worth chasing is Cari, a pale, sweetish, frothy red from the local Pelaverga di Cari grape, all strawberry and rose water. Expect simplicity and drinkability rather than depth.
