Collio (Collio Goriziano) DOC
Italy's most prestigious white-wine hills, on the same crumbly marl-sandstone ponca as the Slovenian Brda across the border. The classic style is full-bodied, dry and textured: Friulano with pear and almond, Ribolla Gialla with lemon and chalk, Pinot Grigio with real weight and copper tint, Sauvignon with grapefruit and sage. Collio Bianco blends from Venica, Russiz Superiore and Schiopetto are among Italy's best whites, and the macerated 'orange' wines of Gravner and Radikon started here. Reds are a minority but Merlot and Cabernet Franc can be very good.
