Delle Venezie (Veneto / Friuli / Trentino) DOC
The biggest single DOC in Italy by volume and effectively the world's Pinot Grigio appellation: some 25,000 hectares across three regions, created in 2017 to put the mass of northeast Italian Pinot Grigio under DOC rules with a taste panel and yield cap. The style is what you'd expect, pale, dry, light bodied, with green pear, lemon and a faint almond note, made cold in tanks and sold within a year. It's a category rather than a place, and the difference between a 9 dollar bottle and a 15 dollar bottle is mostly about how much fruit was sacrificed for yield. Ramato (skin-contact, copper pink) versions are the interesting fringe.
