Falerno del Massico DOC
The modern successor to Falernian, the most famous wine of ancient Rome, replanted on the same volcanic hillsides in the 1970s. The Rosso is an Aglianico-Piedirosso blend, riper and rounder than Taurasi from the warmer coastal site: black plum, blackberry, tobacco, dried herbs and a medium-firm tannin. The Primitivo bottling is a local tradition and shows dark fig and cocoa; the Falanghina white is ripe, floral and citrusy. Villa Matilde is the estate that rebuilt the name, and its Vigna Camarato is a serious cellar wine.
