Faro DOC
A small hillside DOC on the Strait of Messina that nearly died out before Salvatore Geraci of Palari revived it in 1990. Terraced vines of Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and the local Nocera give a wine with more flesh than Etna: red cherry, dried rose, orange peel, leather, Mediterranean scrub and a tannic, salty finish. Palari is the flagship; Le Casematte and Bonavita make more affordable, equally characterful versions.
