Frascati DOC
Rome's house white, grown on the volcanic slopes 20 kilometers from the Colosseum. Basic Frascati is light, soft and a little bitter: pear, white peach, citrus, orange blossom and almond, with low acid and best drunk within a year with fried artichokes or porchetta. The bulk producers made it a cliché in the 1980s, but Villa Simone, Casale Marchese and Poggio Le Volpi show that the Malvasia del Lazio grape gives real perfume and texture when yields are controlled.
