Friuli Aquileia DOC
Wine has been grown around Aquileia since it was a Roman port, and the modern DOC covers the warm coastal plain south of Udine. Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is the calling card: deep purple, with blackberry, plum, violet, black pepper and a characteristic bitter grip on the finish. Whites are fresh and simple, with Friulano and Pinot Grigio doing the volume. Ca' Bolani, the huge Zonin estate, dominates production, and quality is reliable and affordable.
