Mamertino di Milazzo (Mamertino) DOC
Named for the wine Julius Caesar reportedly served, this is a modern revival DOC on the northeast coast. Reds blend Nero d'Avola with the tart, local Nocera grape, giving black cherry, pomegranate, black pepper, wild herbs and a brisk, chalky finish that's fresher than western Sicilian Nero d'Avola. Whites are Grillo and Inzolia based, citrusy and herbal. Planeta's Mamertino brought the appellation to export markets; a few small estates like Cambria and Vigna Nica fill in.
