Modena DOC
A province-wide DOC created in 2009 as an upgrade from Emilia IGT for blended Lambrusco and simple fizzy whites. It lets producers mix the Lambrusco varieties across the whole province, so the wines are usually ruby-purple, soft, fruity and often lightly sweet, with cherry and blackberry and a gentle mousse. Traditional-method 'Lambrusco di Modena' spumante is also allowed, and that's where the interesting bottles are. Otherwise this is the pizza-and-picnic tier.
