Romagna DOC
Romagna Sangiovese is the other Sangiovese, grown on the Apennine slopes east of Tuscany from a distinct clonal population. Younger wines are ruby with sour cherry, violet, blood orange and brisk tannin; superiore and riserva from the hill villages add depth, dried herb, iron and a savory grip that can rival Chianti Classico at half the price. Since 2011 the village names (Predappio, Modigliana, Bertinoro, Oriolo) appear on labels, and that's where the serious producers work. Trebbiano is simple and cheap, Pagadebit is nutty and neutral, Cagnina is a sweet fizzy red curiosity.
