Rosso di Montepulciano DOC
The early-release, lighter-oaked version of Vino Nobile, made from the same Sangiovese clone (Prugnolo Gentile) on Montepulciano's sandy clay hills. It's rounder and less tannic than Rosso di Montalcino, with red cherry, violet, plum, a little cocoa and soft, dusty tannin. Most top Nobile houses make one, and at 15 to 25 dollars it's one of Tuscany's better values for a fruit-forward Sangiovese.
