Terra d'Otranto DOC

A 2011 catch all DOC covering the whole Salento peninsula (the historic name for the heel of Italy), created as a step up from Salento IGT for wines that meet stricter yields. It permits almost every local grape, so the style depends on the label: Negroamaro reds with cherry, tobacco and bitter almond, Primitivo with blackberry and cocoa, Malvasia Nera rosati, Verdeca and Fiano whites. In practice most producers stayed with the IGT, and DOC bottles are rare even in Salento wine shops.
