Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG
A one-producer DOCG in practice: Lungarotti's Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio is the wine that got Torgiano its DOC in 1968 and its DOCG in 1990. It's a Sangiovese-based red aged in oak and then for years in bottle before release, with sour cherry, dried plum, tobacco, leather, balsamic notes and fine-grained tannin, closer to a Chianti Classico riserva than to anything else in Umbria. Old vintages from the 1970s and 1980s still drink well. It matters historically as Umbria's first serious dry red, and it's still a fair price for what it is.
