Valli Ossolane DOC
Piedmont's northernmost and most alpine DOC, where nebbiolo is grown on stone terraces at up to 600 meters under the local name Prünent. The wine is lighter and more mountain-fresh than anything in the Langhe: wild strawberry, red currant, alpine herbs, wet stone and a peppery edge, with taut acid and fine, drying tannin. Superiore versions get a year in wood and gain smoke and dried rose. Cantine Garrone's revival of the old vines made the appellation, and Kermit Lynch's import made it findable.
