Verdicchio di Matelica DOC
The smaller, higher, cooler cousin of Jesi Verdicchio, grown in an inland valley with big day-night temperature swings. Matelica wines are leaner and more mineral: lime, green apple, flint, anise and a chalky grip, with sharper acidity and a bitter almond finish. They can seem austere young and repay a couple of years in bottle. Bisci, La Monacesca, Collestefano and Belisario are the names; Collestefano's organic bottling is a US sommelier favorite.
