Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG
Matelica sits in a high inland valley that runs north to south, cut off from the sea, so its Verdicchio is leaner, more acidic and more mineral than Jesi. The riserva wines show green apple, lime, flint, anise and a chalky grip, with a tighter frame and often lower alcohol than the coastal versions. They need three or four years to open and can go 15 or more. Bisci and La Monacesca are the reference producers and their riserva wines are among Italy's most age-worthy whites at the price.
