Vigneti della Serenissima (Serenissima) DOC
A region-wide DOC for bottle-fermented sparkling wine from Veneto hillsides, created to give the region a Franciacorta-style category separate from Prosecco. The wines are Chardonnay and Pinot Nero based, aged at least 18 months on lees (36 for riserva), and taste of green apple, citrus, brioche and hazelnut with a creamy mousse and firm acidity. Few producers use it; Villa Sandi's Opere is the best known, and a handful of Colli Euganei and Colli Berici estates bottle small lots. Quality is decent but the category has no identity yet.
