Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG
Sangiovese from the hill town of Montepulciano in southeastern Tuscany, on clay and sand soils, aged two years (three for riserva). It sits between Chianti Classico and Brunello in weight: dark cherry, plum, violet, tobacco, and a hint of cocoa, with firm but rounder tannin and slightly lower acid than Chianti. The new Pieve tier, 100% local grapes from twelve named villages, is worth seeking. Boscarelli, Avignonesi, Poliziano and Salcheto are the reference names.
