Italy's volcanic hot spot, where Nerello Mascalese on black lava soils gives pale, perfumed reds often compared to Burgundy or Barolo: sour cherry, dried rose, smoke, orange peel, iron, fine but firm tannin and bright acidity. Carricante whites, especially Bianco Superiore from Milo, are taut and saline with lemon, green apple and a flinty, ageworthy edge. Single contrada bottlings now function like crus, and prices have climbed with the fame.
