The postcard valley between Tuscany's two great Sangiovese towns, with clay and limestone soils and a wide day-night swing. The wines are Sangiovese-based, usually with a little Merlot or Cabernet, and land somewhere between a Rosso di Montalcino and a Chianti Classico: sour cherry, dried rose, leather, bright acidity and firm but fine tannin. Quality varies a lot, and Podere Forte in Castiglione d'Orcia is the estate that shows what the zone can deliver at the top.
